Why privacy on the Web isn’t dispensable

Predicting the future of the Internet is a high-risk undertaking. But there are trends afoot, which, if unchecked, may threaten our basic values or put excess power or control in the hands of particular interests.

Privacy threats are everywhere this summer: We have heard about geo-tags, reconstituted cookies as spyware, surveillance cameras, RFIDs at Wal-Mart, privacy issues on LinkedIn, the US Senate investigating privacy issues, and a Web “Do Not Track” list.

Privacy is valued by individuals because it ensures the right to be left alone, freedom from intrusion into personal life, control of personal information, protection of dignity and integrity, and freedom of movement.
